I could go into the philosophy and history and benefits of EC, but instead I'm going to tell you my story. I'll be real with you...when I first heard about EC, I thought it was a little too crunchy for me, and I'm pretty crunchy! I mean, what's the point? I had heard that people who practice EC take their babies to the bathroom and hold them over the potty every time that they think their baby's need to go. I had a newborn at the time, and I had discovered that they poop and pee all the frickin' time. Who has the energy for that?
It wasn't until I started experimenting with giving my daughter solids at nearly 6 months that I started to be over the whole poop thing. She was also starting to get a lot harder to get a diaper on (all the squirms), and was having pretty major diaper rash. This was when EC came back onto my radar. I was reading one of those sample baby schedules on Baby Center (which usually make you feel like an incompetent parent, amiright?) and this one in particular included a 6 month old baby and a mom who practiced "infant potty training." It made it sound so simple and laid-back. Baby wakes up, sign "potty" and set baby on the mini-potty, and go about your day. Repeat as desired throughout the day. I thought maybe there was something to this. When I want to learn more about something, I dive head first and get semi-obsessive about said-thing, so that's what I did, and pottying became part of my family's life soon after.
I remember the first "catch" on the mini-potty. My daughter was so proud and happy! When I started catching poops, that sealed the deal. Within a month, we had about a 90% success rate with poop (yesss) and whenever I knew she had to pee and it was convenient for us, I'd set her on the pot and she would go. It was great. I had a total shift in mindset...why let your child poop all over themselves and then clean it off of them if you know it's about to happen, and you can just set them on the potty?
We wrapped EC up at 17 months with the "Potty Training Experience" and now I have this little monster I mean munchkin running around who literally says "potty" when she's taking a bath because she wants to get out and sit on the potty when she needs to go. EC has paved the way for a smooth transition into potty independence and THIS is one of the most amazing gifts that EC has given to us.
